Murray & Roberts and SNS-LAVALIN Awarded Contract For Nuclear Demonstration Power Plant in South Africa

26 August 2008

Murray & Roberts and SNC-Lavalin Nuclear are pleased to announce that Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (Pty) Ltd has awarded their joint venture company, Murray & Roberts SNC-Lavalin Nuclear (Pty) Ltd. (MRSLN), a contract to provide engineering, procurement, project and construction management services for Phase II of the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) Demonstration Power Plant at Koeberg, South Africa.

Phase II of the project entails construction of a commercial scale power plant at Koeberg near Cape Town, which is subject to obtaining a nuclear licence from the National Nuclear Regulator and a positive Record of Decision on the Environmental Impact Assessment.

The power plant will use advanced Generation IV technology and supply about 165 MWe (electrical) to South Africa's national grid once in service. Phase I, for the project's scope definition, was completed in June 2008. Phase II work began in July 2008 with an expected date of completion of September 2014. The approximate value of the contract is R 1,9 billion.

Malose Chaba, Executive Director, Murray & Roberts stated that "this is a culmination of over 10 years of Murray & Roberts' engagement on this project. We look forward to leveraging the collective strengths of this joint-venture to deliver this prestigious project."

"We are pleased with this opportunity to bring our experience in ‘New Build' Generation IV nuclear technology to this benchmark project," said Patrick Lamarre, Executive Vice-President, SNC-Lavalin Group Inc., and President of SNC-Lavalin Nuclear. "We developed a good relationship with PBMR and Murray & Roberts on Phase I and look forward to working with them again on Phase II."

The Pebble Bed Modular Reactor is a generation IV high temperature, helium-cooled nuclear reactor. The main advantages of the technology are its inherent safe characteristics, modular design, process heat applications and short construction time.
